The History of South Africa – This morning, again you head out after breakfast, to gain an insight into South Africa’s tumultuous apartheid history, see modern South Africa’s progress and find out more about the life of a world hero, Nelson Mandela, when you visit Robben Island later in the afternoon.
First you head to the District Six site, which leads to the oldest township called Langa, where a short stroll and a stop at a local Shebeen (pub) and spaza (shop) will give you a brief glimpse into township life. Today you will witness the vast difference in quality of lifestyle by observing different living standards. Yes some of what you might see will shock you, but above all you will see progress – new housing developments and the restoration of housing quarters. From Langa, you move to Khayelitsha, which is the ‘new kid on the block’ and is the largest township in the Western Cape, here large scale developments are taking place, from housing to schools, to shopping malls and clinics with many private organisations making a real difference in people’s lives.
In the afternoon, you will head to the V&A Waterfront, where the ferry for Robben Island departs on a scheduled basis. Head out to Robben Island to discover where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for so many years. It’s a highly charged and emotional journey when you see first-hand the hardship and cruelty.
After the tour, you will return by ferry to the V&A Waterfront, where you will hop back onto your coach for your return transfer to your hotel. At the end of today, you will realize just how far South Africa has come with regards to reconciling her differences and taking the positive road from the dark days of apartheid.
